Twenty-six teams played in the WHA from '72 to '79, some for less than a single full season, with 12 seeing action in the inaugural 1972-73 season. The first puck was dropped in Ottawa on October 11, 1972 and the Nationals lost to the Alberta Oilers 7 - 4. Other teams included the Chicago Cougars, Cleveland Crusaders, Houston Aeros, Los Angeles Sharks, Minnesota Fighting Saints, New England Whalers, New York Raiders, Philadelphia Blazers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets. The 12 teams iced 299 different players with a large portion of them jumping from the NHL. The 1972-73 OPC hockey card set issued a fourth series that year consisting of 51 WHA players, 36 of these were former NHL players, with 15 being WHA rookie cards. Over the next while we are going to attempt to create WHA cards for the players missed in the opening season. Our first batch will highlight 18 of the 36 Philadelphia Blazers missed by OPC. The only Blazer card issued in the original OPC set was #338 Johnny MacKenzie.
