Paul Runge played for 15 different teams from coast to coast in a 15 year pro career. His first NHL action came with the Boston Bruins between 1930 and 1932. In 1932-33 he led the Can-Am league in scoring with the Philadelphia Arrows and then held out for more money to start the next season. He was promptly suspended and run out of town but hooked up with the Montreal Maroons for a few games before being lent to the Windsor Bulldogs and the Quebec Beavers where he spent most of the 1933-34 season. His rights were then acquired by the Montreal Canadiens who kept him around for 15 games before eventually trading him to the Boston Bruins. He appeared in 35 Bruins games before returning to Montreal where he skated for the Maroons and Canadiens off and on over the two seasons that followed. He had 1936-37 and 1937-38 cards issued as a Maroon, client wanted a Bruins custom.
Later that year he made his NHL debut playing 12 games with the Boston Bruins where he scored two goals and two assists while adding four minutes in penalties. After his twelfth game, Smillie was done as an NHLer, although he played two more seasons and had stints with six different clubs in three different leagues. In 1936, Don Smillie retired from hockey without getting a hockey card issued.
