Kelly, known as "Battleship", would spend six years following his draft bouncing around the IHL, AHL & CHL as part of the Maple Leaf and Ranger organizations. He would be called up to the NHL by the St. Louis Blues in 1973-74 and was traded to Pittsburgh the same year. He would never appear in a Maple leaf uniform and his hockey rookie card was issued as a Pittsburgh Penguin in the 1974-75 OPC & Topps sets..
