Bert Olmstead, a Hockey Hall of Fame member and five-time Stanley Cup champion who at one point co-held the record for points in a single game, died Monday at the age of 89. Olmstead, a Saskatchewan native, won the Stanley Cup five times, four as a Canadien and once as a Maple Leaf. If you are like me, that's how you remember his career, as a Hab or a Leaf. However, Olmstead made his NHL debut in 1948-49 when he played 9 games as a Chicago Blackhawk. In fact he was a runner-up for the Calder Trophy in 1949-50 during his first full NHL season as a Blackhawk. Recently I created a 1968-69 coach card for Olmstead to mark his short time behind the bench of the Oakland Seals. When I found his Chicago history I decided to also create his Missing Link rookie card. Here they are, the Alpha and Omega of the career of an NHL Original Six legend.

AuthorI am a lifelong Maple Leaf fan, now retired, who started creating custom cards for myself of Toronto players who never had a card issued in the Maple Leaf uniform. From posting some of these on eBay it has become the proverbial "snowball down hill" !!! Archives
