In 1928 the Allan Cup winning University of Toronto Graduates, coached by Conn Smythe, were selected to represent Canada at the Olympics. Controversy resulted when Smythe wanted to add two players to the Olympic roster - Wes Kirkpatrick and Dick Richards. But two of Smythe's own players, Joe Sullivan and Hugh Plaxton, lobbied successfully over his head to have relatives Frank Sullivan, and Bert and Roger Plaxton join the team. Smythe was so upset over this move that he refused to go to Switzerland.
Joe Sullivan did and earned 2 shutout victories for Team Canada on their way to a Gold Medal, won easily by knocking off Sweden 11-0, Great Britain 14-0 and Switzerland 13-0. Here is a 1895 Old Judge Cigarette style custom card to honor Sullivan's contribution.
